Heathrow expansion decision ‘another missed opportunity’
Responding to the news that a Court of Appeal decision has thrown Heathrow expansion into doubt again, Roy Rickhuss, General Secretary of Community said:
“This is another missed opportunity to support our manufacturing sector and demonstrate that the UK can get major infrastructure and procurement right.
“The debate around Heathrow expansion has been going on for too long and today’s decision means yet more dither and delay.
“Heathrow expansion wasn’t just about London and the South East. Heathrow has signed up to the Steel Charter, committing to source steel for the project in the UK. There is also a clear plan to share the wealth around the UK’s regions with the creation of five regional logistics and manufacturing hubs as part of the overall project. Now thousands of good potential jobs risk not being created.
“Everyone recognises the environmental issues involved in any airport expansion and no one denies that those concerns need to be addressed. But the challenges of aviation capacity will not be over, they will just be deferred and displaced.”
